Last night I made a vegan jalfrezi which contained plenty of healthy spices and chillies. We love chillies and spices in our house and it’s a bonus that they all have so many health benefits. 

There are so many varieties of chillies, each having a unique colour, flavour and heat. 

Chillies are packed with antioxidants which protects your body against free radicals.  Free radicals are produced when your body breaks down food or is exposed to tobacco smoke or radiation.  They have been proven to contribute to central nervous system diseases, inflammatory disorders, cataracts and genetic degenerative diseases. Antioxidants act like little caretakers of your body, fighting off the free radicals.

Chillies are also rich in vitamin C.  Vitamin C is an essential nutrient which helps fight off diseases and repair tissue damage as well as maintains healthy skin and bones. 

Chillies also carry many other health benefits such as Balancing blood sugar levels and reducing blood cholesterol as well as helping to release endorphins which are known to reduce pain and contribute to a feeling of wellbeing and happiness.

Our boys have slowly increased their tolerance to the heat of chillies, starting on mild dishes such as korma and masala and now enjoy a dish with quite a bit of heat (providing they have water to hand).  Our favourite family meal out is at our local curry house and you will discover as our recipes grow on our blog… we cook a lot of curries from various parts of the world.
